Metal vs Asphalt Roofing In Colorado: An Honest Comparison

Standing seam metal roof with clean symmetrical panel lines

There is no universally better roofing material – there is only the material that fits your building, your budget and how long you plan to stay. Here is how metal and asphalt genuinely compare in Colorado Springs conditions.

Upfront cost

Asphalt wins clearly. A quality architectural shingle roof costs substantially less to install than standing seam metal, because both the material and the labour are cheaper. If you are selling within a few years, or budget is the binding constraint, asphalt is the rational choice and there is no shame in it.

Lifespan and cost per year

Metal wins decisively. A properly installed architectural asphalt roof lasts 20 to 30 years here. Standing seam metal routinely reaches 40 to 60. Once you divide total cost by years of service, metal is frequently the cheaper roof – it just requires you to fund it all at once and stay long enough to collect the benefit.

Hail performance

This is where Colorado changes the calculation. Asphalt shingles lose granules under hail impact, and once the granules go the asphalt underneath degrades under UV. Metal absorbs the same impact without losing its protective surface. Large stones can leave cosmetic dimples on some metal profiles, but the roof keeps performing. Given that we sit in a major hail corridor, this matters more here than almost anywhere else.

If you prefer asphalt, specify a Class 4 impact resistant shingle. It is the highest rating in the UL 2218 test and many Colorado insurers offer a premium discount for it, which offsets part of the extra cost.

Snow, fire and noise

Metal sheds snow well and reduces ice damming, which matters in Monument, Palmer Lake, Woodmoor and up Ute Pass. It is also non-combustible – a genuine advantage in wildland interface areas like Black Forest. On noise, the common objection is largely a myth: over solid decking with underlayment and attic insulation, a metal roof is no louder in rain than asphalt. The reputation comes from bare panels over open framing on barns.

Our general guidance

If you plan to stay in the house more than fifteen years, or you are in a high exposure or wildfire-prone location, metal usually justifies its cost. If you are staying under ten years, or the budget is tight, a Class 4 architectural shingle is an excellent roof and the sensible pick. We are happy to quote both so you can compare real numbers rather than generalities.
